Kimi Räikkönen To Race Indy Car in 2011?

We welcome outside contributions for post ideas here at The Daily Hoon. Today's post comes from our second race analyst, friend, and fellow petrol-head Austin Brauser, who is currently at University studying Motorsport Engineering. His analysis on Kimi Räikkönen and his possible shift to Indy Car (for at least one race) can be found below:

Many people have been perplexed by Kimi Raikkonen’s decision to move to oval racing in the US, but when I heard about it last week my first thought was: “So much win!” I didn’t really think about his motive all that much at first, but yesterday while perusing the internet it hit me. This move makes perfect sense; Kimi is gearing up to enter the $5 Million IZOD Indycar World Championships at Las Vegas this fall. He already had extensive single seater experience, and he is using trucks to gain the necessary oval experience to prepare himself for Vegas. Some may argue that he could make that much money racing in NASCAR so there is no point in going for the long odds and entering the Indycar race. This would be a good reason, but we aren’t talking about just anyone here, we are dealing with the Iceman. At this point it’s not about the money for him; it’s about doing his own thing and being a complete and utter badass. In today’s overly professional world of top tier racing there are not nearly enough drivers that have the same mentality that he has, sure Kimi has his quirks, but overall he is one of the most entertaining figures in the world of motorsport. His interviews could be a bit more colorful, but some of the things he does say are priceless, like when he was “having a shit” at Interlagos in 2006:

Also, who could forget when he retired from the Monaco GP in 2005 and decided to find a yacht in the harbor and drink away his sorrows with some fine examples of the fairer sex. Kimi is the perfect candidate for entering the Vegas Indycar race as he is one of the highest profile names in motorsport, he has no other driving commitments that weekend, and he has enough money to secure a top-class car capable of winning. Additionally, rumor has it that Red Bull is keen to get back into Indycar and this would be a good first step toward stepping up to a full program in 2012. I could be completely wrong, but based on Kimi’s character a move like this is certainly extremely plausible. Remember when this happens, you heard it here first!

Ferrari Friday - Enzo Envy

Since today is April Fools' day we're going to join in the fun and watch two fools in a Camaro and Mustang attempt to catch up and or race an Enzo. Ha! This video comes from YouTube and Need2Speed.com. With over 12 million hits since 2006 some of you may have already seen it, but to be honest - we could look at and listen to the Enzo all day. Enjoy:

The School of Hoon - Why You Don't Hit The Brakes at 200+ MPH After a Blowout

In our newly named, continuing segment on how to hoon safely and properly (no that's not irony), in light of recent events written up here we are going to provide a PSA on what to do in the event of a 200+ MPH tire blow out.

Obviously, different conditions dictate a series of separate actions to recover from a blowout and stop the car safely. Some of our insights today, and the video accompaniment comes to us courtesy of Berry Lowman (Communications guru, event promoter, rally driver, open road racer, #Motorama LIVE founder). From his experiences, here are just a few of his thoughts on the crash, and what to do if you were in a high speed blowout:

"I suspect tire failure based on the 2nd video footage. Hard to see exactly, but looks like tire fail/brake tap."
...
"You can't even think of touching the brake pedal if a tire blows @ speed. The second you do it flips."
...
"Had 2 friends blow rear tires over 220 @ '09 NORC. One in 4th gen Camaro & one in a Hendrick superspeedway car."
...
"Neither tapped brakes & rode it out, but Hendrick car came to a curve & went off. Rolled 5 times. Walked away."

That's some real insight from someone on the ground; thanks for sharing with us. Finally, here's some footage of a highspeed run of a Nissan 350z experiencing a tire blow out wherein the driver taps the brakes which induces the roll over (what not to do):

Sunday Drive - Cruisin Edition

Welcome back to our Sunday drive, thankfully it's not us driving down arrow straight roads or through snowstorms in the 'Lude. But of course this next video makes me want to be the one in the hot seat here.
Looks like Godzilla got angry at the recent tragedies that occurred in it's home country and took it out on the ring, punishing the tarmac and shedding 2 more seconds of it's already astonishing time.

Enjoy the video, it gets good roughly 3 minutes in to it, mostly because I don't understand what's said up to that point and YouTube doesn't have a translate button like Google does. Hopefully they work on that... Enjoy!

Texas Mile - Hinson Motorsports Turbo Corvette Crash

Yesterday at the Texas Mile Hinson Motorsports' record setting Turbo Corvette Z06 crashed at over 230 mph. According to their facebook page:
"Driver is OK. Our record breaking Corvette was well on the way to raising the bar again when it left the track at over 230mph. The driver walked away and has been released from the hospital. The car rolled one time and landed back on the wheels. This a testament to following safety guidelines and building a safe car. We update this again soon. Thanks!"

Update: While we continue to attempt to track down the video of the crash I was able to find out who took the original photos. Scott Carr was gracious enough to forward the high-res photos that he took of the crash to us at The Daily Hoon. They are now included in the post below. Additionally, there are some rumors that one of the cars to run before the Corvette had exploded its clutch leaving shrapnel at the finish line where the crash occurred. According to Scott: "The car that ran before them seamed ok to me. When the track was cleaned after the accident, it looked like they walked it, and measured the skid; but I did not see them pickup  or sweep that area. So I would say it was a no on the clutch rumor from my vantage point."

Update 2: We found video of the crash on YouTube, from User rossionrace, ©  Augusto Gabaldoni:

Update 3: Hinson Motorsports has posted a video of the wreck from their cameras. Start the clip at 3:28 to see the fateful run, all the footage before that is backstory on the car.

Thankfully the driver walked away and is uninjured. Hoon on, and hoon safely.

Autospotters has some up close photos of the wreck:
