Ten Minutes Of Tsukaba

It's been a great first week here at The Daily Hoon and we'd like to take the time to thank you for checking us out. Hopefully you'll enjoy reading about our journey out west to Dirt Fish Rally school, and our eventual entry in to racing. It's a big weekend for Motorsports with the Daytona 500 tomorrow, and continued rioting/unrest in Bahrain which cancelled the GP2 race and is leaving serious doubts for the beginning of the Formula 1 season.

If you are not already, please follow us on Twitter.

Today's video comes from YouTube where we see the following cars race around the Tsukaba circuit for nearly ten minutes, enjoy!

  • Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Tuned By: RALLIART - Seiji Ara
  • Subaru Impreza WRX STi Spec C - Takayuki Kinoshita
  • Subaru Impreza WRX STi R205 - Naoki Hattori
  • Audi TT RS - Keichi Tsuchiya
  • Nissan 370Z Nismo Edition - Kataoka Tatsuya

Ferrari Friday - FXX Start Up... O_o

Enjoy...and turn your speakers to 11...

Fail Friday

Fail Friday continues here on The Daily Hoon with a BMW M6 attempting to...uhh...take a turn...drift?...not really, just look:

Video Source: YouTube

I hope they buffed it out and it got back on the road in short order. :/

You can spend hours on Flickr trying to find amazing photos. We've done some of the work for you in today's "Ferrari Friday Flickr". Our first edition of the FFF features a white 16M from Stephan Bauer Photography:

Ferrari Friday - FF

Just a quick tidbit to our Ferrari Fans out there, if you don't know this by now, well now you do!

The FF is going live with a web premier at Ferrari.com at 6:00Pm CET, and for those of you who don't know what CET is, like me a few minutes ago, I blame the school system, it's Noon EST.

So what's this mean for us? I suppose all the leaked photos and video's and Ferrari's own press releases haven't been enough... So they will be bringing us more prancing Shooting-Brake gloriousness. I for one don't like hatches but I LOVE Ferrari's and that engine... My God that engine. I'll take it... but it'd have to come in PMY... Please.

Here's Ferrari's official video in case you forgot to take 2 mintues to let your ears and eyes have sex with the screen...

Anyone else think it looks like a mischievous pokeman?

Snow Driving Fail

Today's car related shenanigans comes to us courtesy of Halley O'Brien, check out more of her snow sports related work at: http://halleyobrien.com/ or follow her on Twitter.

So much went wrong here, it's hard to choose where to start.

Doing a J-Turn in that proximity to a light pole wasn't smart, and in retrospect much of what they were doing was quite silly; but I guess that was the point. At least they started right and chose a car that cost about as much as her shoe waterproofing.

When playing in the snow it's always a good idea to pick a spot that you know, and in a car you trust, with someone else that has a car in the off chance you attempt to jump your Kia over a median... and fail...spectacularly.

Regardless of the epic fail, we hope you enjoyed the video of their "360". Also, don't attempt to spin a car around with someone hanging out the window - nothing will ever go right with that.

To paraphrase here... "No one can do worse than they just f*cking did". Enjoy :D and comment below.

Dale Earnhardt - #3

We take a pause from "Fail Friday" today to pay our respects to NASCAR great Dale Earnhardt. Unbelievably, today marks the 10 year anniversary of his untimely death at the Daytona 500. He was a racing legend, an icon of Motorsports, and a true petrol head. Say what you will about NASCAR, the man loved to drive and was one of the best, if not the best ever at what he did. We remember a fallen hoon today. Rest in peace, Intimidator.

The Daily Shot - February 18, 2011

Welcome to the sixth edition of The Daily Shot. This is where we post original pictures taken at track days, races, or just the daily drive around town.

Today's photo is a picture I took while driving around town last summer. It appears to be a Saleen S281 Mustang with some old school Lamborghini style doors. I have no other information on this car, please feel free to comment or drop me a line if you've seen something similar and would like to share.

Hella tight yo.

Canada...eh?

Canada; represented by good natured people, happiness, universal healthcare, and really just off putting advertising. The latest set of commercials from our good friends at Subaru Canada, have a couple new ads up. The "Sexy is Standard" on the Forester, is an interesting ad in my opinion, but I don't get it... I laughed, I cried, I had to at points look away... But yeah, still don't get it.

I then watched the STi commercial SoC put up as well... SoA has Mirra sliding around under an overpass, and the far North version has a black and white cartoon of some transformer like alien attacking a similarly drawn car, which drives around unrealistically then it shows some "stig" looking character driving a real one then thats it, kind of... at least it looks cool in real life. And I don't get it...

To me this shows the vast differences in marketing a northern border will create. I won't buy a Forester, but not because of that commercial, but because I'm going to buy an STi. I'll probably never understand those commercials, but keep making them, cause I'll keep watching.

Countdown to DirtFish Rally School - One Month

Part of the reason Scotto and I started this blog was to create an online outlet for our journey in to the heart of Motorsports. For now it's a hobby, something we do on our free time and look forward to doing more of at the other times. Where this journey will take us is anyones guess, either we're sure it's going to a fun ride.

A few weeks ago Scotto was quick enough to spot a Groupon ad in Seattle for the DirtFish Rally School. We immediately jumped on the chance to get a 1/2 day rally lesson for 1/2 price (Normally $650, only $325 thanks to Groupon). This trip to Seattle was tentatively planned for months, but a hard date was never set. The second leg of the trip will be a cross country drive back to New Jersey with a 1989 Honda Prelude Si donor car. We're saving the story of the Prelude for another day, but for now check out more info on Dirt Fish on their website or like them on Facebook.

They were also recently featured in Wired. Our friends over on Jalopnik also picked up the Wired article and syndicated it this morning, be sure to read the comment section they are always fun filled and informative and if you're lucky will include some lolcats.

We'll be posting more about our trip out West as mid March approaches, but for now, enjoy the Intro video to DirtFish:

The Daily Shot - February 17, 2011

Welcome to the fifth edition of The Daily Shot. This is where we post original pictures taken at track days, races, or just the daily drive around town.

Today's picture comes from a track day at the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, NJ. Here we have Scotto's WRX....

NJMP is great for a lot of things. It's relatively new (Built in '08), has a fun layout and really allows freedom throughout all the paddocks. The garages are on a first come/ first quick repair need basis, so watch out if the Volk wheel'd Sparco seat neon underbody kit M3 crew sets up shop and likes to hang out and look at their cars under a roof in there.

The Pagani Huayra Comes To America

Seen here for the first time on American shores is the Pagani Huayra...what a majestic vehicle. With the announcement yesterday by Pagani that they will be importing the Huayrarayra to the American market they made a clear statement that after 10 years of making the gorgeous, beautiful, lust worthy Zonda they didn't want to impress on America their devilish good looks. Instead, we're stuck with, well, yeah.

Regardless of looks, all signs point to the Huaryyaryara being a super car beast of legend. With a 700 HP twin turbo'd V12 developed by AMG powering her fins there's no doubt in our minds her track day performance will be a force to be reckoned with. Hopefully future iterations will clean up the curves of this super car.

The Craigslist Find Of The Week

Once a week we'll find a fun, unique, or cringe worthy craigslist car/truck ad and highlight here. Please feel free to submit any ideas you have to TheDailyHoon@gmail.com

Today's find is a 1993 Honda civic Si hatchback Turbo B18C race/street car. Say what?

According to the ad over $30,000 was invested in "fully building" the motor. Unfortunately, there is no mention of what was actually done, except to blow smoke up the potential buyers ass. With a claim of "480 HP+" and no supporting evidence in the ad, coupled with the brash disclaimer of "NO TEST DRIVES!" we can only assume that this Honda Civic is near the end of it's usable life, and any remaining horsepower it may have once achieved from it's legendary B18 beating heart are are no where near 400. What are your thoughts?

In case the posting goes down, here's a screen cap:

Visual Pleasure

Another YouTube video, that NEEDs to be watched. Well go on now... stop reading and watch.

Looks like the guys at ring1.de did the right thing with this video and made it pure sound. There's no better soundtrack to a Group C race car than it's own twin turbo V8...

In the qualifying of the 1989 24 of LeMans this Mercedes set the second fastest speed record down the Mulsanne with 248mph. It was the only car to get that speed and be reliable; reliable enough to win. It won every race except one in '89 and in my opinion was one of the last great Motorsport legends.

Aural Pleasure

Yeah if you read this thanks, but seriously just look and listen

This is why GT1 cars aren't really supposed to be on the road. Hearing this somewhere around me while driving, I would crash looking for it, and then after I was able to free myself from my wreckage I would have enough time to film it. Thankfully that won't really happen, I don't think.

McLaren MP4-12C... Finally?

Its been on YouTube for a couple days now but McLaren put out a video showing off in text and moving pictures its new bad boy.

Well its been a while, and in my opinion pays homage to the great F1 of yesteryear. The original F1 was such an amazing machine and it did so much more than just go fast like the Bugatti does now. Still McLaren is staying true the idea of lesser weight and aerodynamic efficiency.

Just with all the money they'll be making supplying ECUs to F1 and now the nail-biting edge of the seat racing in... oh wait no sorry I meant Nascar, they'd be able to make serious waves with this car. Also where's the center "hot" seat, really why are no manufacturers doing this anymore??

With the way technology is moving and with McLaren being supposedly in the front, I would have hoped they would make something that would just blow me away... At least it's not a hatchback.. You listening Ferrari...

Ken Block - Rally Sweden

In a quick clip we see Ken Block launching his Ford Fiesta Rally car some 60 meters over an icy jump from the first WRC event of the season in Sweden. Nice launch, I give the landing an 8.5. Source: YouTube

The Morning Drag, Supercar Style

Looks like GTSpiritVideo has uploaded a first to YouTube this morning, with a "drag race" between a 458 Italia, the new McLaren MP4-12c, and a ass-engined nazi sled, I mean Porsche Turbo.

It's not a really good video, it shows a jumped launch but the MP4, and looks like the Ferrari driver was picking his nose when the flag dropped. Who wins? stay tuned and when you find out let me know...

Either way its a good start to see what this McLaren can do, even if it was a "staged press viral thing for Mclaren" if all that even needs to be quoted. I'll be waiting to see how complete a McLaren can be without Gordon Murry's magic touch, although he did say he's happy that Mclaren was able to keep some of his ideas...

The Daily Shot - February 15, 2011

Welcome to the third edition of The Daily Shot. This is where we post original pictures taken at track days, races, or just the daily drive around town.

Today's picture again comes from the last day of the 2010 Rally America  U.S. Rally Cross season at the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, NJ. This shot features racing legend Rhys Millen in his Hyundai Accent Mk2/LC T16 4x4. This car in person was a complete beast, the aural pleasure experienced during these high speed flybys was simply intoxicating. We've got a few other shots from this event that will be posted soon, stay tuned.

Miko and Ford Rule in Sweden

Miko Hirvonen and his Ford Racing WRC bad-ass car claimed the season opener in Sweden this weekend, and are off to a strong start; Ford swept the podium followed by a Citreon set. The whole race was very exciting and Miko had a great starting position for the last day. He started a few places back which gave him a cleaner track but there hadn't been too much snow picked up to hurt visibility.

"I was really nervous before the last stage but what a fantastic start from the team with the new car," Hirvonen told the official world rally website. "The car has been quick straight away and after a tough season last year I am really pleased with this," he added.
Hirvonen raced past the 23 yr old Ostberg to claim the lead. This sets up Miko and Ford for a solid next race on March 3-6 in Mexico ¡Arriba!

*tip to CNN

And It Continues......

Well it looks like NY is adding some more penalties for people driving in cars on their roads. I like being a passenger, but when this stuff starts affecting the passengers too... I'm moving to my own Nuburgring Nordschleife shaped island...

NY1.com says: The state is increasing the penalty for using a cell phone while driving.

While it’s been illegal for years, starting Wednesday, the state Department of Motor Vehicles will impose two points on the driving records of anyone found guilty of using a cell phone while behind the wheel.

That's in addition to the $100 fine offenders already face.

Those who get caught texting while driving also face points and fines.

*Thanks to Jalopnik for the tip

This Looks Promising

Toyota is trying to not be so beige with its upcoming FT-86, of course it will come here to the US in some lovely "Stage 2 TRD Pro Sticker/Decal/Vinyl Adding Fake Horsepower Kit" with Scion. We have the scoop from 0-60 Mag and the latest info that gets my AWD loving self all tingly is that Subaru's version is gonna likely be an up-powered AWD version... Do I smell a 22B coming here someday? Let's hope it happens, or maybe that they'd consider a Spec C or a Type RA or both, or a S204 replacement for here... I guess we have a thing for Suby's but either way some SUPAAA DORRIFTTOO Toyota or some lightweight overpowered 2-door Subaru, its a win win kind of day.

Thanks to 0-60 and Toyobaru.net for the Infotainment.

The Monday Meltdown

Another segment first for The Daily Hoon is going to be a small tidbit called the "Monday Meltdown". This is where we'll get a video we find on YouTube of someone attempting to Hoon or successfully Hooning in a burnout of some kind. Do they ever succeed? No, not really...

This is a fine example of someone trying and coming up short... Recently posted and saying, "Me Burning off the tires a little before i get my new rims" Well that seems reasonable enough! Come on lets be honest here, no, that was weak. The rear of his car stepped out, the diff trying to not let it get both tires smoking, and lets not get started with the camera action. Needless to say this is the "quality" content you can expect from Fresh YouTube burnouts. That road doesn't look half bad, change the car, driver & cameraman and I think we could have a film worth its weight in fake YouTube money.

Some guy with a fun name was arrested for "filming himself doing 140mph" on a public road in Oregon and was hoping to post it on YouTube. I'm not a a cop or a scientist which means I'm a normal person that falls in between those two, and even I know this is dumb.

Source: PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) - A man who filmed the speedometer of his car while driving more than 140 miles per hour so he could post it on YouTube, ended up in jail on Saturday and the video confiscated, police said.
Stanislav Vadimovich Bakanov was pulled over by police on Oregon Interstate 5 after he was clocked driving his black 2005 BMW at 118 mph. He filmed Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Postlewait as he approached the car.
When Postlewait asked why he was videotaping, Bakanov said he was filming his speedometer, and his arrest, to post on Youtube. The video later revealed that Bakanov had attained speeds in excess of 140 mph.
He was arrested and confined in Marion County jail Saturday night, charged with reckless driving and speeding. It was his third speeding incident in the past year. The video was confiscated and will be used as evidence against him.
Marion County Police spokesman Don Thompson said winds were gusting at up to 50 mph during the day.
"There were tree branches down on the freeway. To be driving at these speeds today was just plain crazy," he said.

This person should be riding the short bus not driving a BMW. There's a difference between being stupid and being daring, usually it has to do with how much money you have. If you're gonna do something like this at least do it in Nevada or somewhere with wide open roads and not tree branches laying in the road or hippies riding bikes to get in the way of some kind of personal attempt at winning a Darwin Award. Check out the video here, via YouTube:

NASCAR Sprint Cup: Budweiser Shootout

So yeah, that happened this weekend.

Kurt Busch won.

NASCAR said that they want the cars to go slower:

Good luck with that.

We'll be following NASCAR as well on this site. While we don't necessarily hate it, we don't love it.

It's Sunday, and I'm at work

Thats right, it's Sunday, its sunny and relatively cold outside and actually it sucks outside. The sun is giving me a headache and the cold is making my nose run all the meanwhile I'm at work, could I ever ask for more?

I could ask and I will, I read a fair share of nameless automotive periodicals. When I was younger I would be able to spout out all sorts of facts about everything. Well I'm glad that now I don't really know whats going on, I know that all these "mags" complain and moan about how X-Brand's battery is Lithium and saves weight and costs $1,500... Who cares, if someone is going to buy that brand they could care less, or more realistically not even notice that that was an option.

It also really bothers me, when I see certain tests with say a Ferrari 599, Aston Martin Vantage, Merc SLS, Corvette ZR-1 (hypothetical... I hope), and the journalists will rave about how great the Ferrari is and how well it's built but it loses because of price... Really? price factors in to when someone has the option of any of those cars?? Do a test on the car, not how many people can buy it.

I'm reading a car magazine to feel how the car drives, the editors get paid to be descriptive and entertaining and really draw the reader in to make them feel they are in fact experiencing this. Why is it that half way through the article its them complaining about the fit & finish or the "glue smell" in the ZR-1? Don't get me wrong that might be pertinent if I actually go and test drive one and decide, yeah that smells like glue...

I'm not bashing the car magazines, I'm just saying the USA magazine's need to take some of the idea's that EVO over in the UK does. They drive the cars, they feel the cars, they talk about how the car made them feel, not how upset they were about the price or how much "petrol" it uses.

They just drive, and that's what drives me.
